Applications are open for National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition 2026. The National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition invites secondary school students and tertiary/NYSC participants nationwide to write on financial independence, retirement planning, and pension reform in Nigeria.
The competition, organised as part of National Pension Week 2026, is asking participants to write on the topic “My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria.” Outstanding essays are shortlisted for nationwide honours, academic prizes of up to ₦1,500,000, and recognition during the National Pension Week gala ceremonies.
Submission requirements: Submissions must be original, titled, and uploaded in PDF, DOCX, or TXT format. Entrants under 18 require parent or legal guardian consent.
Cash prizes of ₦1 million and ₦1.5 million are available across the two categories, alongside laptops, trophies and certificates. Entries close on 20 October 2026.

Category A — Secondary School
- Theme: My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria.
- Eligibility Criteria: Students currently enrolled in a recognised secondary school in Nigeria.
- Maximum length: 500 words
- Prize: ₦1,000,000 + laptop + trophy + certificate.

- Relevance to topic — 20%
- Organisation and clarity — 15%

Category B — Tertiary Institutions & NYSC
- Theme: My Dream for a Great Retirement Experience in Nigeria.
- Eligibility: Currently enrolled student of a recognised Nigerian tertiary institution or serving NYSC member.
- Maximum length: 1000 words
- Prize: ₦1,500,000 + laptop + trophy + certificate.
- Judging
- Research and understanding — 25%
- Critical thinking — 25%
- Practical recommendations — 20%
- Innovation/originality — 15%
- Structure and writing quality — 15%
Eligibility and Submission
- Entry is open only to eligible participants in the published category.
- Each entrant may submit only one essay.
- Entries must be submitted through the official NPW platform before the deadline.
- The entrant must be the author of the submitted work.
- False identity, false student status or material misrepresentation results in disqualification.
- Shortlisted entrants must complete verification when requested.
- Employees of PenCom, members of the competition judging panel, direct competition administrators and their immediate dependants are proposed to be ineligible where a conflict of interest may arise.
- Material administrative changes must be published on the official NPW site.
Accepted formats: typed text, PDF, DOCX. Maximum upload size: 10 MB.
Originality and Authorship
- Essays must be original work created for the competition.
- Material copied without attribution may result in disqualification.
- Quotations and factual references should be appropriately acknowledged where used.
- The organisers may use plagiarism/originality screening and may request an oral explanation from shortlisted entrants.
The essay must reflect the entrant’s own ideas and writing. Standard spelling, grammar and reference tools may be used. Entrants must not submit an essay substantially generated or rewritten by a generative AI system as their own work. Limited research support or brainstorming use should be disclosed, and oral verification may be used where authorship is in doubt.
Verification
- Self-registration using school/institution and student details.
- Shortlist verification using student ID, school letter/portal evidence or NYSC identity evidence as applicable.
- Final verification by institution contact or live/video identity confirmation where required before prize award.
For entrants under 18, parent/guardian consent must be verified before the submission is accepted into final adjudication.
National Youth Pension Literacy Essay Competition Judging Process
- Administrative eligibility check.
- Removal of personally identifying information from judge-facing copy.
- Independent scoring by at least three judges per shortlisted entry where feasible.
- Scores normalised/aggregated by Competition Secretariat.
- Conflict-of-interest declaration by judges.
- Finalist authorship/student-status verification.
- Final approval of winners by authorised Competition Committee.
