Applications are open for GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) 2026. Are you a past Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme grantee with experience delivering international workshops and strategic knowledge management initiatives? GEF SGP Nigeria is seeking eligible organisations to organise the 2026 Western & Eastern Anglophone Africa Regional Capacity-Building Workshop.

The programme provides funding and technical support to eligible civil society and community-based organisations working to address major environmental challenges while improving local livelihoods. The GEF SGP supports initiatives focused on biodiversity, climate change, land degradation, international waters, and chemicals and waste management.

The GEF SGP OP7 Southern Africa Regional Workshop is going to be held in Nigeria in November 2026. SGP Nigeria will host a total of about 35 participants, including National Coordinators (NCs), grantees, NSC, UNDP CO representatives, the SGP Regional Focal Point and SGP CPMT. The participants will be drawn from 12 countries that include Cape Verde, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, and Uganda. The workshop will provide an opportunity for National Coordinators (NCs) from different countries to reflect on OP7 achievements in terms of results achieved, impact stories, challenges faced, lessons learnt and progress made in terms of OP8 implementation.

GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) Objectives

The specific objectives include the following:

Review implementation of Operational Phase 7 (OP7) in terms landscape approaches, country-level targets, results achieved, challenges as well as stocktaking of lessons and good practices generated at the country and project levels.
Discuss GEF 8 Strategic Objectives and Vision
Review progress made in terms of Transition to UNDP (Operational, Administrative and grant-making under OP8; identify common issues and challenges as well as solutions.
Share experiences and peer learning through a field visit to one SGP-selected project.
Discuss the Framework for SGP future opportunities for Resource Mobilisation, and Sustainability, including GEF 9 STAR Negotiations at country levels, Private sector partnerships, Replication and Scaling up of SGP initiatives, opportunity for transboundary initiatives under Africa Region, etc.
Communicating SGP work – production of a documentary and a publication on SGP work and impact stories for the West and East Africa Anglophone Region drawing on the projects’ stories presented by the different countries.
Opportunity for SGP NCs to address specific country concerns with CPMT Regional Focal Point and SGP CPMT.

Terms of Reference

(List of Activities to be Covered by the Capacity Building Grant)

Organise one Africa Sub-regional workshop in Abuja for about 35 participants drawn from 12 participating countries. The grant will cover the airfares, accommodation, subsistence costs and conference package. The grantee will coordinate all the pre-, during and post-logistic issues regarding the workshop with support from the SGP office.
Organise a project site visit to an SGP-selected project. The costs to be covered include transport hire, accommodation and subsistence costs during the project site visit.
Produce a video documentary of the project site visit
Produce a publication showcasing the projects presented at the Africa Sub-region workshop from the participating SGP countries in terms of project results, impact and lessons learnt as well as individual projects best practice cases.
Production of workshop materials including t-shirts, pens, jackets and reusable/biodegradable bags for workshop participants.
Production of the workshop report.

GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) Grant Details:

Maximum Grant Amount: Up to US$100,000.
Co-financing: Applicants must provide evidence of secured commensurate co-financing of at least $100,000 in cash or in kind.
Project Duration: Four (4) months starting from July. Complete reports must be submitted no later than two weeks after the Regional Workshop.
