Applications are IKI Small Grants programme 2026. IKI Small Grants is a global funding and capacity development programme that supports impactful local and regional initiatives focused on climate and biodiversity action. It is part of the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Government.
The international call for proposals addresses local organisations based in ODA-eligible countries with an average annual revenue of between 60,000 and 500,000 euros. IKI Small Grants provides funding between 60,000 and 200,000 euros. The 7th IKI Small Grants ‘Call for Proposals’ launched on 17th November, 2025 and the application period closes 15th January, 2026.
IKI Small Grants, run by the German federal enterprise Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), funds local actors which are the driving force for change and essential for effective climate and biodiversity action worldwide. It is part of Germany’s International Climate Initiative (IKI). IKI Small Grants fosters bottom-up solutions while strengthening capacities of local actors.
IKI Small Grants Funding Information
- IKI Small Grants selects project proposals with a total funding volume between EUR 60,000 and EUR 200,000.
- No proposals with financial requests over or under the above amounts will be considered.
- Furthermore, the requested funding volume must not exceed the average annual revenue of the implementing organisation over the past three years.
Project proposals must focus on one or more of the following IKI funding areas:
- Mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions
- Adaptation to the impacts of climate change
- Conserving natural carbon sinks with a focus on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation
- Conserving biological diversity
Eligibility and selection criteria for IKI Small Grants
Eligible criteria for implementing organisations: Which organisations can submit project proposals?
- In general, applicants should be not-for-profit organisations. Private companies are eligible if they pursue strictly non-profit objectives as part of their proposed project. Individuals or natural persons, one-person organisations and governmental organisations are not eligible for funding.
- Applicants must be based and registered in countries that fulfil the criteria for Official Development Assistance (ODA) defined by the Development Assistance Committee (DAC) of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)1 Organisations that are not financially and legally independent and branches of organisations based in a non- eligible country cannot be funded.
- The applicant organisation must have been operative for at least three years (36 months by the time of the submission deadline).
- Over the last three years the applicant organisation must have generated an average annual revenue of at least EUR 60,000 and no more than EUR 500,000.
- The applicant organisation must have dedicated accounting staff and have accounting principles that ensure internal as well as external control mechanisms.
- The applicant organisation must also employ a software-based accounting system which meets its respective national standards.
- The applicant organisations must implement the projects themselves. Consortia are not eligible and forwarding funds to other implementing organisations is not permitted.
Eligibility check
- The IKI Small Grants team will review the submitted information and confirms eligibility to the eligible organisations by 2nd February, 2026.
- Only organisations that qualified eligible are invited to submit their project proposals with details of the project idea and budget.
- Project proposals have to be submitted by 17th March, 2026 and must meet the criteria outlined in the following documents and below. Organisations will be informed of the results as soon as possible.
