INCLUDE are accepting case study proposals for Green Jobs for Youth in a Just Food Systems Transition in Africa. The global food system is at a critical turning point, grappling with the compounded effects of climate change, the COVID-19 pandemic, and political instability. Nowhere is this more pronounced than in Africa, where vulnerable food systems affect millions of livelihoods. Amid these challenges, the concept of a just food systems transition has emerged as a promising framework in development programs and policies. However, questions remain about how justice in food systems should be defined, implemented, and whom it should prioritize—particularly in the context of African youth, who are both disproportionately affected by inequalities and at the forefront of driving transformative change.

To address these challenges, INCLUDE has announced the launch of its new research programme, “Green Jobs for Youth in a Just Food Systems Transition in Africa.” This initiative seeks to deepen understanding of the political, social, and economic dynamics shaping Africa’s food systems transition while exploring opportunities to create sustainable, equitable, and resilient food systems.

INCLUDE Research Programme Focus and Objectives

Through country-specific case studies, this programme seeks to develop a contextualized understanding of how food systems in Africa can transition towards greater sustainability, equity, and resilience. The call for country case studies will be open to researchers and institutions committed to exploring the political economy dynamics and inclusive development implications of this transition, particularly drivers and barriers to youth employment. The programme will explore key questions such as:

    • How can a just food systems transition contribute to green jobs for youth in Africa?
    • How do national and international institutional and regulatory frameworks shape opportunities for young people in the food systems transformation?
    • How are the climate justice dimensions captured in national efforts to transform the food system?
    • How can food systems transition strategies in Africa take advantage of digital technologies to accelerate youth employment?
    • How do gender disparities impact access to opportunities in green agriculture?

    Funding scope and duration

    • The budget available per paper is a maximum of EUR 30,000 (including VAT).
    • The research process should not exceed six months, including all activities and production of the final paper.

Eligibility Criteria for INCLUDE Research Programme

    • Researchers, institutions, youth-led organizations, and African knowledge institutions are encouraged to submit proposals. Applications can be submitted by individuals or organizations committed to exploring the political economy of food systems transformation and its implications for youth employment.
