Applications are open for Africa Business Contest – Impact Challenge Award 2026. The Africa Business Contest – Impact Challenge Award seeks business ideas and ventures that contribute to solving social challenges in Africa and fostering sustainable economic development. The contest aims to support co-creation and commercialization opportunities between Japanese and African companies.
The Africa Business Contest – Impact Challenge Award is a City of Kobe initiative supporting business ideas for social impact and sustainable development in Africa.
As benefits for finalists, the contest offers a variety of opportunities to help bring their business ideas to life and accelerate growth, including support for refining pitch materials, matching opportunities with Japanese companies, and cash prizes.
The Final Pitch Competition will be held as part of the Africa Business Forum, the flagship event of Africa Month in Kobe AFRIKA meets KANSAI 2026. In addition to keynote speeches and panel discussions on Africa’s business environment and economic trends, the forum will provide opportunities for business exchange with Japanese and Kobe-based companies, creating a practical networking platform that can lead to concrete partnerships and collaborations.
Theme of the Contest
The theme of this contest is: “Business Solutions for Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Development in Africa.”
“Inclusive growth” refers to economic growth that benefits all people, rather than only a select few. “Sustainable development” means development that can be maintained over the long term while minimizing negative impacts on society and the environment.
They invite a wide range of business ideas and ventures that address Africa’s challenges and opportunities, create lasting value in collaboration with local communities, and contribute to the continent’s inclusive and sustainable future.
Eligibility and Categories
Applications are accepted in the following two categories:
- Business Category (Existing Businesses and New Business Expansion Initiatives)
- Companies and startups of any nationality that are already operating in Africa and are interested in collaborating with Japanese companies and startups.
- Japanese companies and startups that are actively considering or preparing for business expansion into Africa.
- Student Category (Business Ideas and Early-Stage Concepts)
- Students of any nationality enrolled in higher education institutions in Japan.
- Students who are Japanese nationals or who hold a residence status allowing continuous residence in Japan (e.g., Permanent Resident, Special Permanent Resident, Long-Term Resident) and are enrolled in higher education institutions in Africa.
Notes:
- Applicants who have already established their own company or startup should apply under the Business Category. However, if the proposed entry is substantially different from their existing business, they may apply under the Student Category.
- Higher education institutions” include universities, graduate schools, junior colleges, colleges of technology, professional universities, and other equivalent tertiary education institutions.

Africa Business Contest – Impact Challenge Awards
To support the commercialization and further development of selected business ideas and ventures, the following prizes will be awarded:
- Business Category
- Grand Prize: JPY 1,000,000 (awarded to one entrant/team)
- Excellence Award: JPY 500,000 (awarded to one entrant/team)
- Student Category
- Excellence Award: JPY 200,000 (awarded to two entrants/teams)
Benefits for Finalists
Finalists selected to advance to the Final Judging Session will receive advisory support to help refine and strengthen their pitch materials in preparation for the final presentation.
In addition, eligible finalists may receive the following forms of support, to the extent possible:
- Business Category
- For applicants under Eligibility Category A-(1):Opportunities for business matching with Japanese companies.Please note that matching opportunities will be facilitated, but specific partnerships or business matches are not guaranteed.
- For up to two finalist companies under Eligibility Category A-(2):Market research and advisory support for business expansion into Africa.This support program is designed for companies considering new entry into or expansion within African markets and includes consultant-led assistance such as market research, identification of potential local partners, and other hands-on advisory services.
- Student Category
- For up to two award-winning participants:Complimentary access to the coworking space ANCHOR KOBE until the end of March 2027.
