The Energy Startup Challenge is a student-led, multidisciplinary competition that calls on university students across Africa to engineer bold, practical, and scalable solutions to the continent’s energy poverty crisis. This competition is part of one of Africa’s fastest-growing student-led energy platforms, bringing together innovators, industry experts, and policymakers.

At a time when over 600 million Africans still lack reliable electricity and energy innovation is becoming a priority sector, this challenge offers more than just prize money—it’s a chance to build solutions that can shape the continent’s future. This competition provides a structured platform for the next generation of energy entrepreneurs, engineers, policymakers, and social innovators to translate ideas into bankable, real-world business models and to compete for recognition, mentorship, and cash prizes totalling over NGN 2,000,000.

Case Studies

Upon registration, your team will select one of the three case studies below as focus of your proposal. Each presents a real-world energy challenge in the African context backed by factual data. Your task is to design a startup that credibly addresses the challenge – covering technical design, business model, financial projections, social impact,
and stakeholder strategy.

PROBLEM STATEMENT 1: The Last-Mile Energy Finance Gap
- How might we design financing mechanisms that make clean energy affordable and accessible for underserved populations across Africa?
PROBLEM STATEMENT 2: Productive Energy, Productive Economies
- How might we design energy solutions that directly unlock income-generating activities in rural
  and peri-urban African communities?
PROBLEM STATEMENT 3: The Clean Cooking Transition at Scale
- What combination of technology, distribution, financing, or behaviour change can drive a
  genuine clean cooking transition in Africa – not just a pilot?

TID 5.0 Energy Startup Challenge Benefits

Prize Structure

Total prize pool: NGN 2,250,000. In addition to cash prizes, all finalists receive certificates of achievement,
access to post-competition mentorship, introductions to investors and incubators, and consideration for prototype funding support (subject to sponsor availability).

Eligibility Criteria for TID 5.0 Energy Startup Challenge

Open to bachelor’s (undergraduate) and graduate students currently enrolled in any university in Africa or studying abroad.
Students from all disciplines and faculties are welcome – engineering, business, economics, law, social sciences,
design, public policy, medicine, and more.
Proof of current enrollment (student ID or official letter) will be required at the Semifinal stage.

Requirement Detail

Team Size: 3 to 4 members maximum
Undergraduates: At least three (3) members must be current undergraduates
Gender Inclusion: At least one (1) female member is mandatory
Cross-University: Strongly encouraged
Cross-Border Permitted: all members must be enrolled students regardless of country
Multidisciplinary Highly encouraged: diverse skill sets produce stronger proposals

How to Apply for TID 5.0 Energy Startup Challenge

Registration is completely free. Follow these steps:

Step 1 – Form Your Team: Assemble 3-4 members with at least one female member and at least three undergraduates.
Step 2 – Register: Complete the free registration form to receive the Official Competition Packet.
Step 3 – Develop Your Solution: Select one of the three case study prompts and develop your solution.
Step 4 – Submit Your Abstract: Submit a 1-2 page PDF abstract before May 28, 2026.
Step 5 – Advance & Submit Full Package: If selected among the top 20, submit your full proposal package.
Step 6 – Compete at the Finale: If among the top 5, attend the Grand Finale in person.
